“Bach really is the universal composer whose music can touch anybody, regardless of religious background or nationality.”
John Eliot Gardiner

Described by Martin Luther as ‘unique in loveliness’, the Gospel of John inspired Bach to respond with music which is by turns evocative, stirring, exultant and profoundly moving – a piece that holds our attention from beginning to end. Having live streamed the St John Passion from Oxford’s Sheldonian Theatre on Good Friday this year, we are now looking forward to performing Bach’s great sacred work in front of a live audience, marking the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists’ return to live performing in 2021.

The cast of soloists includes a new generation of British Bach singers. Nick Pritchard, a memorable tenor soloist in MCO’s last recording of Bach’s Mass in B minor, sings the Evangelist. The two principal actors in the biblical drama are taken by the acclaimed bass Peter Harvey (Christus) and a long-standing collaborator of Gardiner, Alex Ashworth (Pilatus). Former Monteverdi Apprentice Charlotte La Thrope sings the soprano arias, and Peter Davoren, first heard as a soloist with Gardiner in the Monteverdi Vespers in 2010, takes the tenor solos. One of the stars of MCO’s acclaimed 2018 Bach cantata cycle, countertenor Reginald Mobley, performs the alto arias.

Boston Early Music Festival

Recorded at the GBH Fraser Performance Studio, Boston, Massachusetts Length: 1 hour. This concert will premiere on Friday, June 11th 2021 and remain available until the end of the day on Sunday, July 11th.

Tempro la cetra: I tune the lyre | BEMF’s own GRAMMY-winning Musical Directors Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs lead the all-star singers and instrumentalists of the Boston Early Music Festival Vocal & Chamber Ensembles in a performance of selections from Monteverdi’s finest vocal duets and other chamber works. Monteverdi was a master of the five-part madrigal, but by the time he published his Seventh Book of Madrigals, he sought to liberate his vocal writing from this older form. Here, we see a new emphasis on the vocal writing that was characterized by contrasts and polarization between the low and high voices, both vocal and instrumental. Hear these magnificent duets interpreted by 5 outstanding singers, including soprano Teresa Wakim, countertenor Reginald Mobley, tenors Jason McStoots and Aaron Sheehan, and bass-baritone Jonathan Woody.

Programme:

Tempro la cetra: I tune the lyre

Claudio Monteverdi: Tempro la cetra
Monteverdi: Ohimè ch’io cado
Dario Castello: Sonata terza
Monteverdi: Ego flos campi
Andrea Falconieri: L’eroica à 3
Monteverdi: Interrotte speranze
Monteverdi:
 Ogni amante è guerrier
Francesca Caccini: Maria, dolce Maria
Castello:
 Sonata undecima
Monteverdi:
 Quel sguardo sdegnosetto
Monteverdi: Zefiro torna

The fascinating 18th-century French-African composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de St. Georges, was known as “the Black Mozart.” In this new program from Jeannette Sorrell, Bologne’s music and his story unfold. Monteverdi’s beautiful Nigra Sum (I am Black & Beautiful) from the Vespers of 1610 meets African-American composer Jonathan Woody’s 2019 composition of the same title. Renowned countertenor Reggie Mobley shares tales of his childhood growing up Black (and beautiful) in the Deep South. The young voices of Apollo’s Musettes (youth choir) join AF musicians and 5 soloists in this celebration of our shared humanity.
