Tempro la cetra: I tune the lyre | BEMF’s own GRAMMY-winning Musical Directors Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs lead the all-star singers and instrumentalists of the Boston Early Music Festival Vocal & Chamber Ensembles in a performance of selections from Monteverdi’s finest vocal duets and other chamber works. Monteverdi was a master of the five-part madrigal, but by the time he published his Seventh Book of Madrigals, he sought to liberate his vocal writing from this older form. Here, we see a new emphasis on the vocal writing that was characterized by contrasts and polarization between the low and high voices, both vocal and instrumental. Hear these magnificent duets interpreted by 5 outstanding singers, including soprano Teresa Wakim, countertenor Reginald Mobley, tenors Jason McStoots and Aaron Sheehan, and bass-baritone Jonathan Woody.
